What is a WOF?

Warrant of Fitness (WoF) Inspection is a regular safety check required for most vehicles to meet minimum road safety standards. It is conducted by certified inspectors at garages, testing stations, and mechanic shops.

What Does a WoF Inspection Cover?

A WoF inspection checks key components that affect vehicle safety, including:

Brakes – Must be in good working condition.
Tires – Proper tread depth (at least 1.5mm) and no visible damage.
Lights – Headlights, brake lights, indicators, and taillights must be functional.
Steering & Suspension – No excessive wear or damage.
Seat Belts – Secure and in good condition.
Windscreen & Wipers – No major cracks or obstructions, wipers must work properly.
Body Condition – No rust that affects structural integrity.

How Often Do You Need a WoF?

  • Vehicles first registered before 1 Jan 2000 – WoF required every 6 months.

  • Vehicles registered on or after 1 Jan 2000 – WoF required every 12 months.

  • Brand-new vehicles – The first WoF is valid for three years.

What Happens if You Fail a WoF?

If your vehicle doesn’t pass, you’ll receive a report listing the issues that need fixing. You have 28 days to repair the faults and get a free reinspection.

Driving Without a WoF

Driving without a valid WoF can result in fines and insurance issues if you’re in an accident. It’s important to stay up to date to keep your vehicle roadworthy and safe.

Need to check when your next WoF is due? It’s usually displayed on a sticker on your windshield. Otherwise, give us a call, and we can book you in.
